David Hyomes- The Local Report

What a fantastic weekend for the community level of our sport!

The curtain went up on the National Conference League & the Yorkshire Mens League continued on its vibrant path forward.

Our Dewsbury based NCL clubs all emerged from the weekend massively encouraged.

Pride of place goes to Dewsbury Celtic who triumphed 52-18 in their cross valley home clash against Batley Boys. Harry Copley claimed a hat trick, Charlie Heaton & Jack Kelly notched braces with other tries coming from Pat Foulstone, Nathan Waring, Anthony Dunford & Jermaine Akadaire. Charlie Heaton also kicked four goals.

Shaw Cross Sharks emerged from their trip to the far north east with a 28-22 win at Gateshead.

Sharks touchdowns came from a Nathan Wright brace, Joe Russell, Eoin Bowie & Harry Scholes.

Gateshead also scored 4 tries but Brad Baines was the Cross hero as his 4 goals proved the difference.

Thornhill Trojans made the shorter trip to Drighlington & enjoyed a 44-10 victory.

The Trojans established early control & never lost their grip. Harry Woollard notched a hat trick of touchdowns with other tries for the Overthorpe Park men coming from Joel Gibson, Jake Wilson, George Woodcock, Adam Bird & Declan Kaye.

Five goals from Joel Gibson & one from Kaye completed the scoring.

Our only defeated side on opening day still emerged with massive credit, Dewsbury Moor Maroons made the daunting trip to Siddal.

The Halifax based side are long standing giants of the amateur game but Moor put up a massive battle before going down 32-10.

Kieran Dean & Tobias Richardson crossed with Aiden Ineson adding one conversion.

So what does this weekend offer in the flagship league of the community game- Actually quite a lot!

It all starts on friday night with a mouth watering local derby as the green & whites of Dewsbury Celtic climb the hill to Leeds Road to take on Shaw Cross Sharks.

On Saturday afternoon Dewsbury Moor Maroons host Gateshead whilst Skirlaugh travel from East Yorkshire to take on Thornhill Trojans in Overthorpe Park.

On to the Yorkshire Mens League & it is Mirfield Stags who claim the plaudits after a 54-18  Division one victory at Ovenden.

There was a titanic Division two battle that saw Ossett Trinity Tigers go down 24-19 against visiting Doncaster Toll Bar.

In Division Four Dewsbury Moor went down 40-12 to powerful visitors Kirkburton Cougars.

Our two Division five clubs both had narrow losses – Shaw Cross Sharks lost 20-14 at Eastmoor Dragons & Thornhill Trojans went down 18-12 in home clash against Todmorden.
