David Hyomes’ Jersey Talk: #8 – prop forward
Last time out, we discussed the number seven shirt and acknowledged that the shirt was generally worn by the most diminutive but crafty player in the team. This week features number eight – usually the physically biggest player in the team. Open side prop forwards are the enforcers who give the smaller playmakers the platform to ply their trade. Big men who are often the heroes of their own fans but are classified as ‘dirty so-and-sos’ by opposition supporters! When talking about players who have worn number eight at Dewsbury, it seems that everyone remembers Harry Beverley, and by everyone […]

David Hyomes’ Jersey Talk: #7 – scrum-half
The guys wearing the number 7 shirt have always been my favourites – they have always defied the logic that Rugby League is a game for power-packed physical supermen! The shirt is usually worn by the smallest player in the team, but invariably the bravest and cockiest! They are the brains of the team and are the most skilled at kicking the ball in open play. As with everything else in life, you never forget the first and my young days at Crown Flatt saw Alvyn Newall emerge as an early boyhood hero. Newall was an elusive runner and skilled […]

Rams renew dual-registration partnership with Hull KR for 2021
Dewsbury Rams is pleased to announce an extension to our dual-registration partnership with Betfred Super League side Hull KR for the 2021 season. The news was first announced in a letter to season ticket holders earlier this month. In addition, the two teams will contest a pre-season friendly in 2021 from which Dewsbury will receive all gate receipts. The club would like to thank Robins owner Neil Hudgell, CEO Mike Smith and head coach Tony Smith in agreeing to this partnership. Dewsbury Rams Chairman Mark Sawyer said: “I’m really pleased that we have been able to renew our dual registration […]

RFL Board meeting – statement
The RFL Board met on Monday evening to make decisions, as promised earlier this month, on the future of the Betfred Championship and League 1 competitions in 2020, and on promotion and relegation between those two competitions and also the Betfred Super League. The Board also discussed the withdrawal of Toronto Wolfpack from the Betfred Super League for the rearranged 2020 season – with further discussions to follow with SLE, as per today’s statement. The Board’s decisions this evening were as follows: There will be no relegation from the 11-team Betfred Super League in 2020 – for reasons of integrity, […]

David Hyomes’ Jersey Talk: #6 – stand-off
When I first started thinking about custodians of the Dewsbury number six shirt I immediately thought of a father and son duo who played a major part in two of our greatest periods. Alan Agar and Richard Agar left an indelible mark on the history of our club. Alan wore the shirt on what many would say was our greatest day – the 1973 Championship final victory over Leeds at Odsal. He made 153 appearances in Red, Amber and Black, scoring 34 tries, 39 goals plus one drop-goal. Alan also wore the shirt in our 1972 Yorkshire Cup Final defeat […]

Rams enter Autumn Cup
Dewsbury Rams can today confirm that the club has decided to submit an entry for the RFL’s Autumn invitational cup. The decision was made following the Rams being able to secure testing for relevant staff and players. The Rams are in the process of agreeing a relevant capacity under the current circumstances. There would need to be an inspection by Kirklees of whatever arrangements are put in place regarding social distancing, entrances and exits to the stadium, bars, toilet etc and there would need to be a “Covid 19 Plan” in place. The final capacity would not be agreed until […]
