When derby victory was marred by tragedy, by David Hyomes
It was a pleasant spring evening on Tuesday 15th April 1969 – I was 11 years old and, along with several school-mates, headed to Crown Flatt to see Dewsbury take on fierce rivals Batley. The outcome of the game was victory for Dewsbury by eight points to seven. It is amazing that over the decades games between the Heavy Woollen rivals have always been close-fought affairs – one sided contests conspicuous by their absence. So, after a Dewsbury win, why was there sadness? During the game John Davies made a break for Dewsbury, but he went to ground in a […]

Return to Training, Behind Closed Doors and Laws Committee – update
The RFL has issued new guidance to clubs regarding the process for a return to training and the resumption of matches. The document also covers the possibility of matches behind closed doors and this week’s meeting of the RFL Laws Committee. The Five Stages The Government have outlined a five-stage process for the resumption of sport. The first of those is training in small groups; the second is full-contact group training; the third, staging matches Behind Closed Doors domestically; fourth BCD with a cross-border element; and the fifth stage is getting back to sport as we have known it, with crowds in the stadium. The RFL have already issued guidance to the Community Game for how this process will apply – relating […]

That other Cup Final win against Leeds, by David Hyomes
We recently celebrated the 47th anniversary of Dewsbury becoming the Champions of Rugby League. Victories against Oldham, Featherstone Rovers and Warrington took us to that sunny day at Odsal, and a stunning final triumph against Leeds. Go round The Tetley’s Stadium on any gameday and you will find plenty who were there watching the heroics of that sensational team – after all it was only back in the seventies! It’s fair to say though that you will struggle to find anybody who was present on the previous occasion that the Loiners fell foul of Dewsbury in a major final. Dewsbury […]

His coffin was taken to The Tetley’s Stadium, giving former players, staff and fans the chance to say goodbye, before a private family service took place at Dewsbury Crematorium. Jack, we’ll never forget you. Rest in peace.
