Winger moves to Rams on loan

Dewsbury Rams can announce that Betfred Super League side Hull KR winger Will Oakes has moved to the Rams on a season long loan.

The 20 year old who grew up in Halifax has played at the highest level of the sport and now he will be representing the Rams in the Betfred Championship.

Oakes started his career in the Wakefield Trinity scholarship academy, he stayed there for a few seasons before moving to Hull KR to find first team opportunities.

He moved to Hull KR at the age of just 16 in 2016, and made his debut later that year. Just a year later he helped the Rovers achieve promotion back to the Betfred Super League, and in 2018 signed a new deal with the Hull based club until the end of the 2021 campaign.

Last season Oakes joined York City Knights on a one month loan deal and played against the Rams when Dewsbury visited the Knights in the league.

On signing the speedy winger, head coach Lee Greenwood said: “I’m really pleased we’ve managed to secure Will for the season, he is a quality player who scores tries.

“He has done well at York on loan and has held his own at Super League level when called upon by Hull KR. This move gives him the chance to get a full season of playing pretty much every week, something he hasn’t managed to do since coming out of academy rugby.

“His goal is to play well enough this year to get himself in the 1st team picture at Hull KR for 2021 and I’m happy to help him do that. He has areas to work on but I feel like we have brilliant options on our wings now with Will, Gabes and Davey.”
