MATCH REPORT- Oldham 6-24 Dewsbury Rams

Dewsbury Rams won their third game in a row by beating Oldham at Bower Fold on Sunday, defeating the Roughyeds 24-6 in what was another solid performance by Lee Greenwood’s men.

It was a scrappy first half with little exciting action taking place as both teams tried hard to score points.

Oldham managed to score their one and only try in the first half when Ryan Ince found a gap in the Rams defence to score. That would be the first and last time a gap appeared in what was overall a fantastic display of defence on the day for the West Yorkshire side. Dan Abram added the conversion points after the try, making it 6-0 to Oldham.

The Rams then woke up and started to put a few attacks together, with Liam Finn and Paul Sykes leading the team around the pitch expertly well.

The Dewsbury try of the half came when Finn and Sykes were instrumental in the move, the ball eventually popped out to Gabriel on the wing who finished a great move off in the corner. Sykes kicked a difficult conversion to add the extra’s, making the score 6-6.

With the score tied at half time, the Rams knew they were in a game and that Oldham were not making it easy on a cold afternoon.

It took just five minutes into the second half for the Rams to go into the lead as Connor Scott grabbed a pass from Liam Finn. Scott then bulldozed his way over the line in what was a great show of strength from the prop. Sykes kicked over a simple conversion to add the two points and the Rams were now 12-6 ahead.

On the 50th minute the Rams won a penalty as Oldham were given offside, Sykes kicked the ball through the sticks to score. That took the tally to 14-6 to the Rams.

Over the course of the next ten minutes Oldham rallied around and started to put a few attacks together, putting the Rams under real pressure at one point under their own sticks. However Dewsbury managed to keep the Roughyeds back so they couldn’t score a try.

The Rams managed to extend their lead on the 71st minute when Joe Martin swiveled and shot away from the Oldham defence to score a fantastic try. Sykes again kicked the conversion making it 20-6 to Dewsbury on what was becoming another glorious afternoon.

Oldham didn’t give up and still battled away, however the game was done by the 79th minute when Will Oakes scored a great try in the left hand corner to put the game to bed. He finished off a flowing move from right to left to cap off a fantastic afternoon for the Rams. Sykes missed his conversion but it didn’t matter as Dewsbury celebrated the win in front of the away supporters.

Next up for the Rams is a trip away to Whitehaven in the Challenge Cup on Wednesday evening.
