Remembering Mick Hughes: A Rugby Legend and True Warrior

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our former player, Mick Hughes, who left us on 15th January 2025, after a courageous battle with MND, which he was diagnosed with in mid-2024. Mick was born on 19th August 1950.

Mick had a distinguished rugby career, playing for several clubs including Hull Kingston Rovers, Hunslet, Wakefield, York, and Dewsbury. He began his playing career with Hull KR in the late 1970s and finished with Dewsbury in the late 1980s. During his time at York, Mick played over 100 games and was part of the team that reached the Challenge Cup Semi-Final against Wigan at Elland Road in 1984, where they were narrowly defeated 14-8.

Known for his toughness and durability, Mick was a back rower who never took a backward step on the field, earning the respect of all who played alongside and against him.

Our thoughts are with Mick’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed by all who were part of his rugby journey.
