Rams keep up 100% league record at the New River Stadium with victory against London Skolars.
Just six days after their Challenge Cup exit in London, the Rams returned to the capital aiming to avenge that defeat against the Broncos and keep up their perfect league form against League One’s bottom side, London Skolars.
The Rams got off to the perfect start with three tries in the opening ten minutes. Firstly, a fortunate bounce from the kick-off gave the Rams some good early field position and Owen Restall went over for his first of the afternoon. Restall then went over for his second on eight minutes after Captain Reiss Butterworth had made a fantastic break through the middle.
Almost immediately after Restall’s second, Caelum Jordan then scored his fifth of the season after some good play down the Skolars’ right-hand side.
On twenty minutes, Butterworth then made another fantastic break on the last tackle before sliding a kick through to Lewis Carr who skipped round the Skolars defence to score.
Five minutes later, after a spell of Skolars pressure on the Rams line, Caelum Jordan managed to pluck a stray pass out of the air and run the length of the field to get his second of the afternoon.
The Rams weren’t done for the half though, Ollie Greensmith then scored his sixth of the season after a powerful burst over the line from close range and then just before the hooter the Rams got their seventh of the first half when Lewis Carr ran in his second of the afternoon.
After the break it was very much a case of roles reversed, as all the early pressure was coming from the home side who were looking to make the breakthrough, which they did when Lamont Bryan barged his way over from close range. The home side scored again shortly after Lameck Juma went over from five metres out. For the next fifteen minutes or so after the Juma try, the Skolars applied even more pressure to the Rams line but couldn’t find a way through.
When the Rams finally gained some field position towards the end of the game, Owen Restall went over for his third of the game and his second hat-trick of the season. With two minutes left, Matt Garside then managed to score his first try of the season after Davey Dixon had cut in field and played the second rower in.
The scoring wasn’t complete though and it was to be the Skolars who got the final points of the game when Harry Kaufman gathered a scrappy grubber kick to score in the corner just as the final hooter sounded.
After the game Rams Head Coach Liam Finn said, “I think we lacked some real energy today and we didn’t seem up for the fight, especially in the second half, but luckily we’d scored enough in the first forty to get away with it.”
Our next game sees us back at FLAIR Stadium for a huge top of the table clash against Doncaster RLFC on Sunday 14th May (15:00).
