Rams run in fourteen tries in huge victory against Cornwall RLFC.
FLAIR Stadium was the venue for the first ever meeting between Dewsbury and Cornwall, with the Rams looking to keep up their 100% record in both league and cup action so far this season.
The Rams got off to a great start when Perry Whiteley finished off a lovely flowing moving in the corner and when Calum Turner, deputising on kicking duties for Paul Sykes, kicked the conversion the Rams had a six-point lead after just four minutes. The lead was doubled on twelve minutes when a lovely short ball from Calum Turner gave Jimmy Beckett a huge gap to run through to score his second try of the season.
Davey Dixon then scored on his return to the side, a great break from Jackson Walker providing the platform for the ball to be spread to the Rams’ left and give Dixon an easy run in. Dixon doubled his tally two minutes later with a jinking run from the forty-metre line carving through the centre of the Cornwall defence to score under the posts.
Sam Day then got in on the action with a try from one of his trademark scoots from dummy half, giving the Rams a thirty-point advantage after just twenty-six minutes.
Joe Summers, making his Rams debut, then scored his first for the club barging his way over from close range after some excellent Rams defence had forced a Cornwall goal line drop out. Simon Frewin then became another Ram to score his first for the club when he shrugged off two Cornwall defenders on a blistering run down the right to score.
Sam Day bagged his second just before the break with another close-range effort after Davey Dixon had laid the foundations with another fantastic break. Cornwall did manage to get themselves on the board just before the hooter though when Harry Aaronson scored in the corner after the Rams had knocked the ball on close to their own line.
As the second half began the Rams got back up and running straight away when Elliot Morris managed to wriggle his way through a couple of would-be tacklers to get the ball down over the Cornwall line. Perry Whiteley then scored his second of the afternoon thanks to a great break from Calum Turner.
Sam Day got his hat-trick shortly after the fifty-minute mark with some excellent play once again quickly scooting from dummy half and managing to break through a gap in the Cornwall defence. The Rams then had a second hat-trick hero of the day, when winger Perry Whiteley climbed highest to collect a kick to the corner and then finished spectacularly in the corner.
At this point with over twenty minutes left on the clock it may look as if the Rams could have broken some records, but the visitors fought bravely and got their reward when Harry Boots got their second try of the day after Cornwall were awarded a penalty close to the Rams line.
With only a couple of minutes left the Rams were still pushing for more and not content with the three, Perry Whiteley went over for his fourth try of the afternoon and his ninth of the season.
To finish off proceedings, just before the final hooter, there was to be a hat-trick of hat-tricks for the Rams when Davey Dixon scored another excellent try after a delightfully mazy run through a tired Cornwall defence.
After the game Rams Head Coach Liam Finn said, “I was very happy with the game went today, we managed to get a few of the lads in who needed some game time and get the job done.
We’re really looking forward to next week as a group again it’s another chance for us to test and see if we’re at Championship level, which is where we need to be.”
Our next game sees us back in Betfred Challenge Cup action against London Broncos at Rosslyn Park FC on Sunday 23rd April (15:05).
