Rams maintain perfect start after hard fought victory at Derwent Park.
The Rams faced a difficult trip to Derwent Park for what would be their toughest test so far against Workington Town, who like the Rams, were relegated from the Championship in 2022.
It was the Rams who made a great start to the game after just two minutes when Perry Whiteley finished over a fast-flowing move corner. However, after this fast start the two sides started to even each other out with Workington applying a lot of pressure on the Rams line, but not managing to score thanks to some ferocious goal line defence.
The next breakthrough came from Caelum Jordan who just about managed to get the ball down in the corner after pass from Lewis Carr out of the back of the hand. Unfortunately, Jordan was injured in the act of scoring and wouldn’t return for the rest of the game. The remainder of the first half was a scrappy affair with both sides making errors and the Rams struggling to capitalise on their strong start.
The start of the second half was a different proposition however, as the Rams managed to get two quickfire tries to ease some of the pressure. Five minutes after the break Brad Graham went over for his fifth of the season plucking a Paul Sykes kick to the corner out of the air. This was followed three minutes later with another try when Perry Whiteley scored his second of the afternoon after taking a chip over the top by Calum Turner.
Sean Sabutey gave the home side some hope after he rose highest to collect a kick to the corner, but this was extinguished shortly after when Ronan Dixon smashed over from close range to all but seal the victory. Paul Sykes then added a drop goal from thirty metres out to give the Rams an almost unassailable nineteen-point lead with just eight minutes left.
There was still time for Workington’s Caine Barnes to receive a yellow card for a tip tackle which left the home side to finish with twelve. Although the Rams couldn’t capitalise on the extra man, a third straight Betfred League One victory was secured and the 100% record in the league and cup remains intact.
After the game Rams Head Coach Liam Finn said, “It was very tough out there today, it wasn’t vintage by us at all, but with our doggedness and determination we managed to get over the line. To come here and get a win, in what will be one of our toughest journeys of the season is a positive whichever way you spin it.”
