David Hyomes- The local report

The action continued for our local clubs in the vibrant Yorkshire Mens League last weekend.

Whilst there were fears that the lockdown months would see players & volunteers finding other pursuits to fill their time it does appear that there has been a renewed sense of energy at our clubs.

Our highest status club in the Yorkshire Mens League structure are Mirfield Stags who play in Division One –

Sadly last weekend saw them beaten 44-10 at Westgate Common.
Ossett Trinity Tigers were also on their travels but came unstuck in East Yorkshire as they were beaten 66-0 by Skirlaugh Bulls.

The good news is that the above two results were the only defeats our clubs suffered throughout the divisions.

Dewsbury Moor enjoyed a cracking 38-12 win against visiting Crigglestone All Blacks in their Division Four clash.

There was an intriguing shark attack in Division Five North at Leeds Road as Shaw Cross Sharks took on Seacroft Sharks – A low scoring encounter saw Cross victorious 10-4.

It was a happy afternoon in Overthorpe Park as Thornhill Trojans beat Brighouse Rangers 46-14 in Division Five West.

The action continues this weekend as Shaw Cross Sharks make a short friday night trip to Eastmoor Dragons in Division Five North.

The rest of the action is on Saturday afternoon.

Division One sees Mirfield Stags travel to Ovenden whilst Ossett Trinity Tigers host Doncaster Toll Bar in Division Two.

Dewsbury Moor take on Kirkburton Cougars at Heckmondwike Road in Division Four.

The only other Yorkshire Mens League fixture for our local clubs sees Thornhill Trojans at home to Todmorden in Division Five West.

Plenty of local interest in the various age groups in the Yorkshire Junior League last weekend & results for our teams were:

Under 18s

Shaw Cross Sharks Reds 34 Dewsbury Celtic 0

Under 16s

Keighley Albion 4 Dewsbury Moor 40

Shaw Cross Sharks Blacks 40 West Bowling 0

Under 15s

The action in the girls game continued too & this really does appear to be a fantastic area of growth as the local scene has never been so healthy. In the Under 16s Premier Division the girls of Dewsbury Moor took on a strong Leigh Miners Rangers outfit and battled bravely before succumbing 22-0.

There was joy for Shaw Cross Sharks who won away 26-20 at Stanningley in Division One.

It was a glorious weekend for the local lasses at under 14 level as both our teams claimed away victories.

Dewsbury Moor triumphed 34-4 at Cutsyke Raidettes whilst Shaw Cross won 30-0 at Illingworth.

It was a similar story at Under 13 level for both clubs. Dewsbury Moor won 24-16 at Farnley Falcons whilst Shaw Cross Sharks defeated Oulton Raidettes 34-0.

As I reported a couple of weeks ago Saturday 22nd May sees the opening games for our National Conference League clubs.

It is a battle of the valley as Dewsbury Celtic take on Batley Boys in Crow Nest Park.

Shaw Cross Sharks make the long trip to Gateshead whilst Thornhill Trojans make the much shorter journey to Drighlington.

Dewsbury Moor Maroons stay in home soil as they take on the powerful Siddal outfit.

Finally what a joyous night on monday as our beloved Rams won a vital encounter across the pennines at Swinton Lions.

Winning at Heywood Road is never an easy task. Well done to Lee Greenwood & his staff. Well done to all the players & also a big well done to those fans who travelled over there when it became apparent at a late stage that away fans were allowed to purchase tickets.
