Dewsbury Rams got their Betfred Championship season off to the best start possible as they beat Whitehaven on Saturday night.
The Rams had been defeated and knocked out of the Challenge Cup by the Cumbrian club two weeks ago.
However Lee Greenwood’s men put in a much better performance and eventually came out the victors.
It was Whitehaven who scored first on the evening. Lachlan Walmsley managed to cross the whitewash in the left corner to put the away side 4-0 up. He missed his conversion kick attempt to add two extra points..
The first half was scrappy and whilst both teams had plenty of attacking opportunities. Dropped balls, knock ons and penalties got in the way of what could have been a more free flowing half.
The Rams grabbed the lead just before the break when Sam Day scooted over from close range. Paul Sykes converted the kick to make it 6-4.
The Rams came out really strong in the second half. Two Matt Fleming tries eventually put the game to bed.
The first came on the 49th minute when Dewsbury had created a bit of space down the left hand side. The ball was given to Fleming who raced away to score a fantastic try. Sykes converted the kick to make it 12-4.
Fleming’s second was even better! Coming on the 53rd minute Michael Knowles burst down the left and smashed through the Whitehaven defence. He guided the ball into Fleming’s hands, he then used his pace to cross the line. Sykes missed the kick keeping things at 16-4.
Liam Finn kicked a drop goal on the 74th minute to make sure of the victory.
Whitehaven scored the last points of the evening as Jason Mossop crossed the line. Walmsley missed the kick to leave the final score at 17-8 to Dewsbury.
