Report: Rams defeat Barrow in close match

Dewsbury Rams collected all the points in a close encounter against Barrow Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams defeated their Cumbrian opponents 22-20 on the day, and the victory meant that Dewsbury moved up to 9th in the division.

The game started off in an even fashion with neither side really dominating the play, however Dewsbury were creating chances and looking dangerous on the attack.

It wasn’t until the 17th minute that the first points were scored and they were grabbed by the visitors. Barrow were awarded a penalty and decided to kick for two points. Jamie Dallimore converted his first kick of the day and Barrow were 2-0 up, but it wasn’t long before the Rams struck back.

Just three minute later Jack Teanby strode over the line to score the Rams first try of the afternoon, Sykes converted his first kick of the day to add the extra’s and the Rams went in front for the first time 6-2.

In what became a frantic five minutes it was the Raiders who scored next, a try from Matthew While put the Raiders on the front foot. Dallimore converted his kick for the two points and the score stood at 6-8 to Barrow.

Barrow were awarded two more penalties before the half finished, one on the 28th minute and one on the 37th minute, Dallimore dispatched the kicks with ease to take the score into half time 6-12 to Barrow.

The Rams came out fired up for the second half and scored a superb try just two minutes in, Sam Day dived over the line to bring the scores closer, Sykes converted his kick to make the scores level.

Dewsbury extended their lead on the 53rd minute when Gareth Potts went over the whitewash in the corner, Sykes couldn’t convert his kick, putting the score at 16-12 to Dewsbury.

The visitors went back in front on the 62nd minute when Dean Parata stormed over the line to score, Dallimore converted his kick and Barrow went ahead 18-16. Barrow’s scoring came to an end on the 65th minute when they were awarded another penalty, Dallimore again added the two points making the score 20-16 to Barrow.

There was a twist in the tail to come and it happened on the 73rd minute, the Rams were pilling on the pressure and got their try when Lucas Walshaw smashed his way through a static Barrow defence. James Glover took the kick this time, and didn’t miss, making the final score 22-20 to Dewsbury.

The Rams travel away to Sheffield Eagles next week, with a kick off time yet to be decided.
