Rams fall to another defeat against Widnes Vikings at DCBL Stadium.
After last week’s disappointing defeat at home to Doncaster, the Rams started a trio of consecutive away games with a visit to Cheshire to face Widnes Vikings.
The Rams got the first score after some brilliant play from Reiss Butterworth who sprayed a fantastic pass out wide to Brad Graham who fed Lewis Carr to score his first of the season. The foundation for the try was laid by a brilliant tackle from Marcus Walker who took the Widnes winger into touch inside the Widnes half.
Just before the thirty-minute mark the home side got their first score of the game when Sam Wilde went in under the posts. Then before the break, Matty Fozard put Widnes ahead after a scoot from dummy half.
Just after the restart the Rams got themselves level after a brilliant cut out ball from Bailey O’Connor found Lewis Carr who went in for his second of the afternoon. However, Rhodri Lloyd soon pushed the home side back in front, bursting over from close range.
Shortly after both sides were down to twelve, with sin-binning per team within minutes of each other. First, Matt Garside went to the bin for a high shot on Tom Gilmore and then Sam Brooks joined Garside in the bin after swinging his elbows whilst being tackled.
Mike Butt added to the Vikings lead after scoring in the corner with seventeen minutes remaining. With less than ten minutes left, Carr thought he was in for his hat-trick after a mazy run from Bailey O’Connor but play was correctly brought back for a forward pass.
Widnes scored two late tries to give the scoreline a slightly skewed look, firstly Sam Wilde scored his second followed shortly after by Matty Fozard who also notched up his second.
After the game, Rams Head Coach Paul March said “It’s a tough one to take today, I thought effort-wise we were outstanding, we obviously made some errors towards the end but that was when we were trying to get back in the game.”
Our next game sees us face our old friends, Batley Bulldogs at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium on Sunday 21st July with kick-off at 15:00.
