LIONS BEAT RAMS

Rams suffer defeat at Heywood Road against Swinton.

After last week’s narrow defeat in Cumbria, the Rams were back on the road again this time to Heywood Road to face Swinton Lions.

It was the home side who got off to the perfect start when Mitch Cox collected a grubber to score the opening try of the game. The Rams answered straight back, after Jacob Hookem provided a wonderful late offload to give Curtis Davies an easy opportunity to score his second of the season.

The Rams extended their lead just after the fifteen minute mark with another wonderful offload creating the chance to score, this time it was Matt Garside with the offload to Owen Restall who scored his second of the season.

However, the home side turned it around and went into the break ahead with three tries in the next twenty minutes. Firstly, Jayden Hatton scored for the home side after collecting a high kick to the corner. Then Josh Eaves put the Lions in front after a quick scoot from dummy half close to the Rams’ line. Tee Ritson then finished off a Swinton move in the corner to give the Lions an eight-point advantage at the break.

Dewsbury needed a quick start in the second half and did so, as Brad Graham got the Rams back to within two points when a high ball caused chaos in the Swinton defence and the ball eventually found its way to Graham who scored on his return from injury.

The home side soon restored their eight-point advantage when Daniel Spencer-Tonks crashed over from short range. Once again though the Rams answered back when Travis Corion scored his first Rams try on his first league appearance with some great play from the scrum.

That was as good as it got for Dewsbury however, when a quick-fire double all but gave Swinton the victory, Rhys Williams scoring first followed shortly after by Dan Abram after the Lions had made a break down field.

With minutes remaining Ronan Dixon was sent to the sin-bin for a late shot and Swinton took full advantage with both Spencer-Tonks and Ritson picking up their second tries of the afternoon.

After the game Rams Head Coach Dale Ferguson said “That’s very frustrating today, it was similar to how we played last week, started off well but imploded towards the end of the first half and left ourselves with too much to do.”

Our next game sees us face Doncaster RLFC at the Eco-Power Stadium on Sunday 28th April in the Betfred Championship, with kick off at 15:00.
