Rams victorious over resilient Cornwall RLFC side on first ever trip to Penryn.
The Memorial Stadium in Penryn was the scene for the Rams’ first ever trip to Cornwall to face Cornwall RLFC.
The first twenty minutes were hotly contested with both sides having spells of pressure on the others’ line but without being able to get the first score. The Rams needed some magic to make the breakthrough and it came in the form of Jimmy Beckett who picked the ball up on the forty-metre line and skipped round the Cornwall defence to score under the sticks.
The Rams couldn’t seem to get another score though, more great Cornwall defence keeping them at bay. On the half hour mark, the home side then thought they’d scored through Harry Aaronson but he was judged to have been in touch when he put the ball down in the corner.
Just before the break came a flurry of yellow cards, Davey Dixon and Cameron Brown were both sent to the bin for a scuffle off the ball and then with three minutes to the break Morgan Punchard was sent to the bin after a clash for Jackson Walker. The Rams were unable to take advantage of the extra man and went into the break ahead by six.
Shortly after the break the home side got themselves level, which on the balance of play they deserved, a misplaced pass in the Rams backline was intercepted by Coby Nichol who went through to score under the posts. To add further insult Dale Ferguson was then taken off with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
Far from deterring them, the Rams then regained the lead with a score from Caelum Jordan after a lovely break from Bailey O’Connor sent the Centre through. A penalty goal shortly after increased the Rams lead to eight and then just three minutes later Brad Graham managed to wriggle over from close range to increase the lead to fourteen.
With less than ten minutes left the Rams managed another couple of scores, firstly through Lewis Carr who finished off a well worked move from a scrum and then Caelum Jordan scored his second of the afternoon on the hooter.
It wasn’t a vintage performance from the Rams and the home side certainly battled hard throughout, but it’s another victory to add the Rams tally this season.
After the game Rams Head Coach Liam Finn said, “I’m glad to get the win today but performance wise we were way off our usual levels and that’s something that we’ll have to improve on for our upcoming games.”
Our next game sees us back at FLAIR Stadium for a clash against Rochdale Hornets on Friday 16th June (19:30).
