RAMS BEAT SKOLARS

Rams run in nine tries in big victory over London Skolars at FLAIR Stadium.

A week on from an enthralling contest against Oldham RLFC, the Rams returned to FLAIR Stadium to face League One’s bottom side London Skolars.

Despite the difference in the league table, it was a tense opening with both sides having some good spells of possession and opportunities to score, that was until Ollie Greensmith made a fantastic break and fed Owen Restall, who just about managed to wriggle free of the Skolars Fullback.

The Rams then went further ahead shortly after some slick handling gave Davey Dixon an easy run in to score a try in the left-hand corner in front of the Beaumont Terrace.

Dixon then scored his second of the afternoon just before the half hour mark after burrowing his way over from dummy half, earlier in the set Dale Ferguson, who was making his 250th first-class appearance, had made a fantastic break through the Skolars defence to give the Rams great field position.

The Rams then added another score just before the break, Lewis Carr made a wonderful break down the wing evading two Skolars defenders before feeding Bailey O’Connor to touch down under the posts.

After the break, it was the visitors who struck first when Liam O’Callaghan found a gap in the Rams defence after running from dummy half. However, the Rams soon regained their twenty-two-point lead when Dale Ferguson made an explosive break through the middle and played in Bailey O’Connor to score his second of the afternoon.

Matt Garside then scored his second try of the season after some neat play down the short side close to the Skolars line, which was started and finished by the big second rower. George Collins, making his first competitive start for the Rams, then got himself on the scoresheet after a lovely mazy run cut through the Skolars defence.

With less than ten minutes left in the game there was still time for Owen Restall to get a couple of tries and secure his third hat-trick of the season. His second of the afternoon came after Jimmy Beckett had smashed his way through the tiring Skolars defence. Then with two minutes to go the hat-trick was secured with an easy run in, when Restall was on the shoulder of Lewis Carr who’d made a fantastic run through the Skolars defence.

After the game Rams Head Coach Liam Finn said, “We got the job done out there today and that’s what it was all about, we set ourselves some targets within the group for the game, but that’s what we wanted today to win the game”
