CENTURIONS BEAT RAMS

League leaders Leigh Centurions run in eleven tries on a difficult day at the Tetley’s Stadium.

On what was a scorching day at the Tetley’s Stadium, the Rams were facing one of their toughest tests of the season against league leaders and 1895 Cup winners Leigh Centurions.

The Rams made a fantastic start to the game and took an unexpected lead when Reiss Butterworth scooted over from dummy-half and when Paul Sykes added the extras, the Rams were six points up with only four minutes gone.

This was however as good as it got for the Rams all afternoon, as the rest of the first half was one-way traffic. The visitors ran in seven scores before the end of the first half to give them total control of the game. The tries were through: Krisnan Inu, Kai O’Donnell, Caleb Aekins, Sam Stone, James McDonnell and Nene Macdonald. Ollie Greensmith was also shown a yellow card just before the half was up.

The second half was much the same as the first with five additional scores for the away team by: Josh Charnley, Joe Mellor, Ben Reynolds (x2) and Edwin Ipape. The Rams defended hard for the majority of the second half and the effort was there throughout, but the visitors showed their class and completed a comprehensive victory.

After the game, Rams Head Coach Liam Finn said “It was very tough for us today, they’re a very good team. We started well though we were very positive but in the first half with the number of penalties and six agains against us, they’re going to make you pay with the team they have. Defending twenty-two sets when you only have eleven is going to hurt you especially with the quality that they have.”

Another tricky test awaits us Saturday 23rd June (15:00), as we travel to Kingston Park to play Newcastle Thunder.
