Greenwood: A win is a win but it was a chalk and cheese performance

Dewsbury Rams head coach Lee Greenwood was pleased with the win over Swinton on Monday night. However he wants to see a more rounded 80 minute performance going forward.

The Rams were victorious on Monday night as they defeated Swinton Lions 20-18 in a nervy ending.

On the win and performance Greenwood said: “The result and two points are the main thing and if you would have asked me before the game does it matter how we win I would have said no. It was important to get a victory after three defeats in a row.

“We knew Swinton would be hard to beat, we knew it would be tough to come here and get a win. We knew Swinton were going to be hard to break down at times and they were.

“In the first half we played very, very well. We controlled the ball well, we looked threatening and it was all going to plan.

“They then came out second half really hard, we were too soft and we never turned it around in that 40 minutes. There was a bad pass, a loose ball, an error, bad discipline. They just seemed to roll on one after each other. We never got out of it and we need to be better than that. It’s happened too many times this season whether it be first half or second half.

“It’s strange it’s like we give a penalty away and instead of just calming down and going back to normal we then do something else daft that compounds it all. It needs fixing because if that game goes on a bit longer we could have lost it.

“Obviously the positives were the first half. We looked really good and played very well. Completed our sets, broke through lines, looked threatening had good ideas and stuck to the plan.

“Wins are hard to come by in this division. Let’s be honest at the start of the season if you would have said we would have had a 50% win rate after six games I think we would have taken that.

“Of course we were disappointed to lose the last three and to lose in the manner we did. However you have to take positives overall.

“Look at how much effort the lads had to put in to win it in the end last night. It shouldn’t have been like that, we made it hard work.

“Keenen Tomlinson, Annakin and Hall all took big hits so we’ll have to check on them.

“I thought the two lads on loan did really well and had good debuts.

“I was sat in the stand next to Swinton fans and obviously they were calling for things but I thought the ref did well. It was good to have fans back. I remember two years ago and that grim ending we had where we lost. I was hoping for not a repeat, but we hung on and hopefully the Rams fans who made the effort to come over were sent home happy.”
