Dewsbury Rams defeated the Widnes Vikings 22-14 yesterday evening in Widnes.
The Rams put in a brilliant defensive effort alongside scoring some clinical tries.
The game got off to a positive start when Paul Sykes converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0 to Dewsbury on the 4th minute.
The Rams kept up the pressure and were rewarded with a try on the 15th minute. Sykes kicked high and Deon Cross failed to catch the ball. Rams fullback Joe Martin pounced and stole the bouncing ball to score. Sykes scored the conversion attempt to make it 8-0 to Dewsbury.
The home side then came out fighting and grabbed a try of their own in the 21st minute. Matty Smith found a gap to cross the line. Jack Owens couldn’t convert the kick and the score stayed at 8-4 to Dewsbury.
Widnes were looking dangerous on a number of occasions but the battling Rams defence kept plugging away. The likes of Morris, Tomlinson, Annakin, Garratt and Day all tackling like machines.
The Rams were rewarded on the 34th minute with another try. Paul Sykes sent a missile pass out to Tomlinson who popped the ball out to Oakes who crossed the whitewash. Sykes this time missed the kick leaving the score at 12-4 to Dewsbury.
The home side again tried to get a try back and eventually they did just before the break. Lloyd Roby crashing over. Tyrer misses the kick to leave the score at the break 12-8 to Dewsbury.
Dewsbury started the second half as they started the first. The Rams scored two minutes into the half as Sykes once again lifted the ball high into the air. Sam Day grabbed the ball passed to Walton who passed to Gabriel who scored. Sykes converted the kick to add the two points making the score 18-8 to Dewsbury.
Gabriel scored another try eight minutes later when he caught the high ball and slammed it down. Sykes this time missed his kick putting the score at 22-8 to Dewsbury.
The Rams battled away for the rest of the half and whilst Widnes went close on a few occasions they only got over once. Tyrer scoring a try three minutes from the end. Tyrer converted his own kick to leave the final score 22-14 to Dewsbury.
