Greenwood on Finn being brought in

Dewsbury Rams recently announced the signing of Liam Finn on a contract until the end of the 2020 season. Head coach Lee Greenwood explained the decision behind bringing in the 35 year old halfback.

Finn who has played at Super League level and has represented Dewsbury before has a good standing in the game.

Greenwood said of the decision to bring in the experienced player: “We sort of became aware of Liam’s availability. We have said from the start that if any player improves the 17 and if we think they will strengthen a rival and we think there is a deal to be done we will look at it.

“Liam ticks a few boxes for us, if you look at the first four games we are disappointed to not have won all four. I think Liam will add something which has been missing a little bit, now we have got him, he strengthens the squad.”

“If you are looking for experienced players they tend to be older, it so happens that we have got Liam now at the age he is. I think you look at Paul (Sykes) and you can see he doesn’t look the age he is which is testament to him. Liam’s experience will definitely help us going forward.

“He had been travelling up to Newcastle and then helping to coach at Wakefield plus other things. You think it’s just rugby but it’s actually a lot and it’s a difficult one when you have a young family yourself. So he has probably found it a bit difficult in trying to do it all and to the best of his ability. We know him personally and have known him a long time, he was here before and obviously he works with Wakefield so it all ties in nicely and ticks a box with a lot of people. As I said as a player he gives us something we didn’t think we had before.

“I coached him when I started the juniors up at Siddal, I have played against him and with him too. He knows what we are like as coaches and we know what he can bring. He will guide us around the pitch.”
