Heckford captured by Rams

Dewsbury Rams have secured the signing of half-back Lewis Heckford on a permanent basis, the 21 year old was on loan at the club last year, and now new head coach Lee Greenwood has decided to bring Heckford back to the club for a more permanent deal.

Heckford has risen through the ranks at Wigan Warriors academy system and the young player has also represented his country at youth level.

Heckford spoke exclusively to the Rams website about him re-signing for the club, and insists he is excited for the challenge ahead.

He said on his return to the Rams: “I was down here last year with the club on loan, and I enjoyed working with the lads like Paul Sykes, Robbie Ward and Sam Day. My contract was up at Wigan and I had to make a decision on where I wanted to go and obviously knew I enjoyed my time here last time.

“I spoke to Lee and he told me the plans he had for the club and it would have been silly of me not to take up the opportunity to come back. Lee wants to push the club forward and run things differently around here which I like the sound of. He spoke like a lot of Super League coaches do and that excited me, he is definitely pushing the club in the right direction for me.”

On his new signing, head coach Lee Greenwood is delighted to bring in a player of Heckford’s talent and says the 21 year old was keen to sign for the club.

Greenwood said: “Lewis was very keen to sign for the club permanently following his short loan spell last season. He certainly has the ability to play at this level and maybe even above. He is a local lad and after a few years in the youth system at Wigan he now wants to make a name for himself at 1st team level.

“Lewis is a very talented player, he has good skills and for a young lad he is not afraid to take the organising duties on. He has things to work on like everyone does but I see him playing a big part for us over the coming years.”

There will be more of the interview the club conducted with Lewis coming up in the next few days/weeks.
