Moore retires

Dewsbury Rams half back Gareth Moore has decided to retire from professional rugby league. The 29 year old player signed for Dewsbury in 2017 and played a pivotal part in helping the club to remain in the Championship.
His second season at the club was marred by both head and foot injuries that meant he missed a large chuck of last season playing in just 9 games for the Rams scoring a try and a field goal in those games.
With his business continuing to grow and needing more of his time and with the ever increasing time demands of being a professional rugby league player Gareth has taken the decision to retire from the game with immediate effect.
Rams Chairman Mark Sawyer said: “I would like to thank Gareth for his openness and honesty in taking this decision. He still had one year left on his contract and we had hopes that he would wear the Rams shirt in 2019 but both injury issues and business interests have come to the forefront.
“Gareth’s decision to make this announcement early is very much appreciated and is a great help to us. I would like to thank Gareth for everything he has done for us during his time at the club especially in 2017. I wish him well with his ongoing business interests and he is welcome to join us at our games whenever he can.”
On his decision to retire from the game Moore said: “It comes with a deep heart that I have to retire from the game I have loved since I was four years old.
“I have a fast growing business what takes all of my time up and the commitment of been a semi-professional rugby player isn’t easy while doing this. I’d like to thank all the clubs that I have played for and coaching staff that have had to put up with me along the way.
“I have met some great people and made some friends for life through the sport and this wasn’t an easy decision. I would also like to thank my wife for putting up with me over the last 12 years when results have not gone my way and also my father who has done everything he could during my career.
“Mark and the club have been great with me over the last 18 month with work commitments etc but I can’t play and train half-hearted and wish them the very best of luck for the future.”
Gareth has played for a number of professional rugby league clubs including Batley Bulldogs, Dewsbury Rams, Featherstone Rovers, Halifax RLFC, Leeds Rhinos, Wakefield Trinity and York.
He signed with Leeds Rhinos at the age of 17 and made his debut in the Super League with Wakefield Trinity in 2011. In 2010 Moore was a part of the Batley Bulldogs team that won the Northern Rail Cup.
The club would like to wish Gareth luck with his work going forward.
