Day targets flying start to Super 8s

Hooker Sam Day is eager for the Rams to make a quick start to the Super 8s.

Dewsbury face Swinton, Batley, Sheffield and Barrow in the opening four weeks of their Championship Shield campaign, and Day sees no reason why the team can’t take maximum points.

“Obviously, survival has to be the overall objective for us, but looking at the fixtures that came out this week I think we should be aiming to win the first four games, especially if we carry on the performances from recent weeks,” he said.

“And if we can do that then we will climb that table – and hopefully challenge for seventh place.”

Following last week’s trip to Toulouse, the Rams players are enjoying a week off from action.

“Neil has given us the week off to have a break and hopefully that will mean that some of the boys that have been carrying knocks can rest and recuperate, and come back firing for the Eights.

“I think a break is needed at this time off the season with some crucial games coming up.”

With the Rams nursing injuries and fitness ahead of the Super 8s, Day featured on the wing in the match against Toulouse on Saturday.

But the former Featherstone hooker says he was happy to slot into the unfamiliar role to help out the team.

“Toulouse was always going to be tough and right from the start we knew we had a few regulars missing,” said Day.

“But the lads who came in late definitely stood up and I’m sure they have given Neil something to think about for these last seven games.

“Starting on the wing was definitely something new for me,” Day added.

“Having played hooker all year it was quite a change, but also something I quite enjoyed as the game went on.

“If Neil asked me, I’d definitely be up for playing there again.”
