Match report: Dewsbury lose to Leigh

Dewsbury Rams 12-58 Leigh Centurions

It was once again a baking hot day at the Tetley’s Stadiums and unfortunately it was a defeat for the home side.

Dewsbury started the game well, and put Leigh under pressure early on, the home side also showed some good defence early on too. However the visitors scored their first try on the 10th minute. Leigh broke fast and the Rams defence couldn’t keep up, it was Drew Hutchison who finished off the move by planting the ball over the whitewash. Ex-Dewsbury player Ben Reynolds was converting the kicks on the day but missed his first attempt, putting the score 4-0 to Leigh.

The next try came seven minutes later when Liam Hood crossed the line for the Centurions. He was too strong for the Rams defence as he bulldozed his way across the line, Reynolds was on point this time with his kick, adding the extras, making the score 10-0 to Leigh.

Leigh were in again just two minutes later when Craig Hall ran 60 metres to score his first try of the day. Rams players misjudge a wayward bounce, Hall kicked the ball forward and again and finally placed the ball over the line. Reynolds added another two points by converting the kick, meaning the score was now 16-0

The Rams got a try back on the 23rd minute when Robbie Ward stole in and crossed the line to score, Paul Sykes as usual kicked to add the extras and now the score stood at 6-16 to Leigh.

Leigh extended their lead on the 31st minute when a kick from left to right was gathered, and then a combination of passes put Freddy Bailey through to score, Reynolds again adding the extra two points.

Hutchison grabbed his second try of the day just before half time, when he ghosted past Dewsbury’s defence to score. Reynolds once again dispatched his kick with ease and the score at half time was Rams 6-28 Leigh.

The Centurions scored their first try of the second half on the 51st minute, Daniel Mortimer crossing the line for the visitors, Reynolds kicked the goal, taking the score to 6-34 to Leigh. They scored again just three minutes later when Bodene Thompson went across the whitewash, Reynolds converted the kick and the score went to 6-40 to Leigh.

Craig Hall raced away to score his first try of the game on the 59th minute for Leigh, Reynolds once again kicked the goal to extend the visitors lead. The Centurions scored again just two minutes later when Harrison Hansen went over the line, Reynolds again kicked the conversion to now put the score at 6-52.

The Rams grabbed a second try on the 68th minute and it was Ward again who was the scorer, a fantastic move from Dewsbury was well finished off by Ward. Sykes again successfully kicked the conversion to take the score up to 12-52 to Leigh.

The fixtures last try came from the visitors on the 75th minute when Kevin Larroyer went over the line, Reynolds again kicked the goal, putting the final score at 12-58 to Leigh.

Next week the Rams travel away to Swinton Lions in what will again be a big game in the Betfred Championship.
