Grassroots: Funeral for odds-defying amateur player takes place today

The funeral for a much-loved and respected former local amateur Rugby League player takes place today.

David Roebuck passed away earlier this month at the age of 60, more than 35 years after he suffered devastating spinal injuries while playing for the Heavy Woollen district team.

Roebuck, a hooker, wasn’t expected to survive his injuries, but he defied the odds to cement his legacy as a true local hero.

“He had a phenomenal spirit which kept him going through some really dark and difficult times,” said former team-mate and local publisher, Danny Lockwood.

“He never fell out of love with rugby, despite what it cost him. Whatever his own troubles, Dave always had a smile and a cheery word for anyone who stepped through his door, or who he bumped into when friends took him out and about.”
