Dewsbury Rams ended a run of nine defeats after claiming a well deserved draw away at Halifax on Sunday afternoon.
The game started well for the visitors, and they thought they had scored on the fifth minute when Robbie Ward ghosted through the Halifax defence to put the ball down over the line, however play was brought back for a knock on earlier in the move.
That showed the Rams intentions though, and Dewsbury did have their first try just four minutes later. A good move was created through the centre of the pitch, and Crowther found a gap just to the right of the posts to score. Paul Sykes now back from injury was once again on kicking duties and duly did the business by converting for the extra two points.
With the Rams taking an early 6-0 lead, Halifax weren’t going to just role over, and they did put the visitors under some pressure for the next few moments. However Dewsbury were putting in a solid defensive display.
Dewsbury extended their lead on the 13th minute, as Sykes converted a penalty to put the score up to 8-0.
The next try of the game again came from the visitors, as Michael Knowles stormed through the Halifax defence to bundle the ball over the line. Sykes once again converted for the two points, putting the Rams in a healthy position going into half time.
The Rams were 14-0 up going into the second half, however that lead was cut with a very early second half try for the home side.
Halifax’s QLT burst through the Rams defence on the 47th minute to score for the home side, Steve Tyrer kicked the conversion to make the score 14-6.
It was just four minutes later when Halifax got their second try of the afternoon, this time it was Tyrer who went over the whitewash. Tyrer missed his kick meaning the Rams stayed in a four point lead.
Tyrer got his second try of the day on the 58th minute; a long kick from right to left was caught by Tyrer in the corner where he flopped to the floor to score. He then made sure he didn’t miss the kick to put Halifax into the lead for the first time.
As the home side were just getting into their stride, it was abruptly stopped by Rob Worrincy who intercepted a poor pass from a Halifax man. Worrincy went clean through to score. Sykes kicked the conversion to put the score at 16-20 to the visitors.
The game once again swung the way of the home team when Halifax’s Ed Barber went through to score on the 73rd minute. Tyrer didn’t miss his kick and it was Halifax who again took the lead.
The fixture wasn’t finished their though, as just three minutes later the Rams won a penalty on the 76th minute. Sykes did the honors if only a little unconventionally as his kick only just cleared the bar, but it cleared it and that was all that mattered.
That kick put the score at 22-22 and with some big defensive displays at the end being put in, that’s how the game ended.
Up next for the Rams is the Summer Bash where they face local rivals Batley Bulldogs.
