MATCH REPORT Dewsbury Rams 27-32 Rochdale Hornets

Dewsbury Rams slipped to an eighth defeat in a row on Sunday as they lost to the Rochdale Hornets at The Tetley’s Stadium.

Declan Kay’s late try gave the visitors a much needed victory.

The game started off at a slow pace with both sides feeling each other out early on.

It was the visitors who scored first on the 7th minute. A poor pass by a Rams player was collected by Tyler Whittaker who ran through to score the first try. Whittaker then added the extra’s to put the Hornets 6-0 up.

The home side were level just four minutes later when a brilliant move down the left was finished off by on loan player Cameron Scott. As Paul Sykes was injured it was James Glover on kicking duties. Unfortunately he missed the conversion, the score was now 6-4 to Rochdale.

The visitors extended their lead on the 21st minute when the Rams gave away a penalty. Rochdale kicked for two points and Whittaker converted, taking the score to 4-8.

The Rams took the lead for the first time on the 29th minute. Aaron Brown was the player to clear the whitewash. Glover this time converted for two more points and the score became 10-8 to the Rams.

The end of the first half’s scoring was just like the start. Rochdale re-took the lead through Setareki Talatoka who powered his way through the Rams defence to score. Whittaker converted the extra’s to take the score to 10-14 to Rochdale.

The Rams started well in the second half and scored inside the first four minutes. Dom Speakman crossed the line to put the Rams at least level. Glover converted to give Dewsbury a 16-14 lead.

Things got better for the Rams four minutes later when Josh Guzdek scored his try of the afternoon. Again Glover converted putting the score at 22-14 in the Rams favour.

Two tries from the visitors put them back in front. One from Talatoka on the 55th minute and the other being Matthew Hadden on the 64th minute. Whittaker converted after both tries to put the score at 22-26 to Rochdale.

Gareth Moore then scored a try with only 6 minutes left to go. That put the sides level on 26-26, as Glover missed his conversion.

Moore then kicked a drop goal on the 76th minute to put the Rams in the lead by a point.

However it was heartbreak for Dewsbury. Rochdale’s Declan Kay scored a 79th minute try to win the game for the visitors. Whittaker also converted his kick.

Dewsbury’s next game is away at Barrow next Sunday.
